Hair growth and insulin resistance

Hirsutism and insulin resistance in PCOS: how the two can be linked

Extra facial or body hair, stubborn weight and sugar cravings can share a hormonal background. Talk it through privately with a female dietitian, without embarrassment.

  • Respectful, private consultation
  • Reports reviewed where relevant
  • Diet and lifestyle support, not quick fixes

What is hirsutism?

Hirsutism means extra dark, coarse hair in places where women usually have fine hair, such as the chin, upper lip, chest or lower belly. It is common in PCOS and can be upsetting, especially when others comment on it. It is nothing to be ashamed of.

Hair growth also has other causes, including family patterns and some medical conditions, so a doctor should look at sudden or fast changes.

How can insulin resistance be involved?

When the body responds less well to insulin, it can make more of it. In some women with PCOS, high insulin appears to push the ovaries to make more male-type hormones, which may contribute to hair growth, acne and irregular cycles. Not every woman with PCOS has insulin resistance, and the link differs from person to person.

Tests such as fasting insulin, HbA1c, lipid profile and DHEA-S may help a doctor understand your situation. Which tests are useful is a decision for your own doctor, based on your history.

What can diet and lifestyle do?

For many women, steadier eating and activity help with weight, cycles and some symptoms. Hair changes usually come slowly, may be modest and cannot be promised. General guidance:

  • Regular meals with protein and fibre, and balanced portions of roti and rice.
  • Fewer sugary drinks and sweets, and chai with less sugar.
  • Daily movement and a regular sleep routine.

Hair removal or medical options for hirsutism are for a dermatologist or your treating doctor to discuss with you. We do not advise on medicines.

You speak privately with Dietitian Sadia Ahmad, who has an MPhil in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, by video, audio call or WhatsApp. She listens to your history, reviews any reports you have, and builds a plan around your home food, with WhatsApp follow-up. See pricing or the symptom checklist to prepare.

What this program is and is not

This page is information and support. It is not a diagnosis and it does not replace an in-person examination, your own doctor's advice or your tests. Any decision about medicines, including metformin, insulin or birth control pills, belongs to the doctor who is treating you.

When to see a doctor in person: very heavy or prolonged bleeding, severe pelvic pain, signs of pregnancy complications, fainting, or feeling very unwell need a doctor or emergency care in person, not a message on WhatsApp.

Questions about best pcos doctor in Pakistan

Will diet remove unwanted hair?

No. Diet cannot remove existing hair. For some women, better insulin control and a steadier routine may slow new growth over time, but this differs for every woman and cannot be promised. Hair removal and medical options are a matter for a dermatologist or your treating doctor.

Do I have insulin resistance if I have extra hair?

Not necessarily. Extra hair and insulin resistance often appear together in PCOS, but one does not prove the other. Only a doctor, with your history and tests, can say whether insulin resistance is part of your picture. Tests such as fasting insulin and HbA1c are discussed in a consultation.

Is hirsutism always PCOS?

No. It can run in families and can also come from other conditions, including thyroid and hormone problems. Sudden, fast or severe hair growth, or signs such as a deepening voice, should be checked by a doctor in person, not through a website or a message.

Can spices like cinnamon or turmeric help?

Evidence is limited or mixed. They are food choices, not medicine, so use them as you normally would in cooking, and do not expect them to change hair growth. If you take medicines for diabetes or other conditions, ask your doctor before using them in larger amounts.

Is it private if I feel embarrassed?

Yes. Consultations are confidential and with a female dietitian. Many women feel awkward discussing hair growth, and you can share only what you are comfortable with. The short request form asks for basic details only and asks you to keep your medical history for the consultation itself.
